CONT Sailing Ship Diamond departed Cork 1841 2 CONT On arrival John was age 22 years hence year of birth is 1819 2 CONT 2 CONT The introduction of the Bounty System enabled many people from Ireland, as well as from Engla 2 CONC nd and Scotland, to migrate to Australia. During the 1830's and 1840's almost half of all ass 2 CONC isted migrants were of Irish origin. The emigration figures for 1841 show that of the peopl 2 CONC e who arrived in Australia there were 4,563 English, 1,616 Scottish, and 13,400 Irish.26 2 CONT 2 CONT There had been some improper actions indulged in by bounty agents, but Governor Gipps took st 2 CONC eps early in 1841 to tighten up the regulations. 2 CONT 2 CONT "Mr T.F. Eliot had been appointed Agent-General for Emigration in 1837, and he had agents o 2 CONC f the Government at various outports, Including lieutenants Low at Liverpool, Heemans at Gree 2 CONC nock, and French at Cork. The duties of the agents were similar to Eliot's, though naturall 2 CONC y on a smaller scale. They supervised the shipping arrangements, and saw that proper provisio 2 CONC n was made for the safety, comfort and health of the passengers during the voyage. They provi 2 CONC ded information to private individuals, institutions and Parishes about the facilities existi 2 CONC ng for assisted emigration to various colonies. They prevented frauds being practised on th 2 CONC e poorer class of emigrants who had been unscrupulously exploited by many of the shipowners 2 CONC . And finally, they provided the emigrants themselves with any information they might desir 2 CONC e to have. 2 CONT 2 CONT The agents were distinct from the surgeons or agents sent over from New South Wales to superv 2 CONC ise the selection of emigrants for particular ships. The former were inspectors appointed b 2 CONC y the Government. They had no power over selection of migrants. Dr Hall was appointed permane 2 CONC nt agent for the selection of emigrants in Ireland."27 2 CONT 2 CONT Certain shipping agents undertook to fill vessels with migrants, and it was the actions of th 2 CONC e unscrupulous ones that the Government by the 1840 regulations sought to control. One of tho 2 CONC se agents was J.B. Were, who had arrived in Melbourne from Plymouth in 1839. On 7th Februar 2 CONC y 1840 he wrote to Lieutenant-Governor C.J. La Trobe: 2 CONT 2 CONT "I beg most respectfully to submit that labour in this country being quite inadequate to th 2 CONC e large demand, I am desirous of introducing into this Port (under regulations of 15th Septem 2 CONC ber 1837 and 29th April 1838 for the interests of emigrants) one thousand families, with a pr 2 CONC oper proportion of single males and females. Your Honour's compliance with my request and th 2 CONC e earliest intimation of the same is respectfully solicited." 2 CONT Advertisment in the Cork Advertiser (June 15, 1841) 2 CONT Advertisment in the Cork Advertiser (June 15, 1841) 2 CONT Courtesy Cork City Library 2 CONT 2 CONT Approval was given on 3rd March 1840. Between July 1841 and February 1842, ten ships arrive 2 CONC d in Port Phillip with nearly two thousand emigrants "brought to the Colony by J.B. Were " 2 CONC . A large proportion were from Ireland having embarked at Cork.28 2 CONT 2 CONT Information concerning ships sailing to Australia were published from time to time in the Cor 2 CONC k Advertiser, as well as other papers. Doubtless the question of emigrating had been discusse 2 CONC d by Thomas and Anne Clancy with their relatives for some time, and they would have seen th 2 CONC e advertisement on page 16, applied for and been granted selection as Bounty Emigrants, and m 2 CONC ade their arrangements to sail. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Diamond was built at the Isle of Man in 1835 and was the fourth of the ships chartered b 2 CONC y J.B. Were. On her previous trip to Sydney in 1838 she carried 162 female convicts, one, Mar 2 CONC y Carmody being only thirteen years of age. Thomas Clancy, his wife and four children -John 2 CONC , Eleanor, Thomas and Agnes, embarked on this ship, leaving Catherine (5 years) and Mary Hann 2 CONC o (3 years) with their grandmothers. A hint as to why they were left may be obtained from th 2 CONC e work of Caroline Chisholm. In the late 1840's she discovered that hundreds of Irish childre 2 CONC n had been left behind by their parents who had emigrated. It was stated that bounty was onl 2 CONC y paid for four children. This may have explained why these two girls were left.29 2 CONT 2 CONT The Diamond Captain, W. Taylor, had Dr Irons on board as surgeon. It had fourteen first clas 2 CONC s passengers, six intermediate passengers and 330 bounty emigrants. The latter consisted of 4 2 CONC 1 families, 54 unmarried males and 67 unmarried females. Some of the surnames were Brennan, B 2 CONC owles, Boyle, Curtis, Cummins, Coffinger, Cleary, Doolan, Forrest, Flyn, Holland, Hartney, He 2 CONC ron, Hislop, Healey, Hifferon, Jordan, Keenan, Kennedy, Lyons, Mullin, May, McDonel, Oximy, R 2 CONC yan, Priestly, Simpson, Shanahan, Spearin. There were fifty children. Protestants numbered 4 2 CONC 4 and Roman Catholics 209. About half the adults could read and write. They represented a var 2 CONC iety of occupations - carpenters, labourers, farm-servants, shepherds, stockmen, smiths, on 2 CONC e gardener, one mason, one wheelwright. Most passengers were from Ireland, with just a few fr 2 CONC om England. The ship carried a super cargo of 480 deals and 270 boxes of soap. Thomas, Anne a 2 CONC nd the three older children could both read and write. Thomas was listed as a carpenter. Perh 2 CONC aps this gave him a better opportunity of coming as a bounty migrant than if he had describe 2 CONC d himself as a ".Gentleman farmer"..30 2 CONT 2 CONT July 1841 was election time, and at Mallow, near Castletownroche, there were lively meetings 2 CONC , with Fathers Collins and McCarthy taking active parts. On 17th July, when the Clancy's woul 2 CONC d be about ready to journey to Cove for embarkation, torrential rain fell in the area. They w 2 CONC ould already have been on board when the Regatta was held on the harbour on 22nd July. The da 2 CONC y was fine and Cove was a place of great gaeity. 31 With a steady wind blowing from the north 2 CONC -west, the Diamond sailed out of Cork Harbour on 24th July. 2 CONT 2 CONT The journey was uneventful and the Diamond arrived in Melbourne on 4th November, a journey o 2 CONC f 104 days. From contemporary accounts one can gain a fair impression of the journey, wit 2 CONC h a mixture of fair weather and foul. They did not sail in the season of wintry gales, but ma 2 CONC y have been becalmed for a time. Rain would replenish the supplies of fresh water. There wa 2 CONC s the usual ".crossing of the line". ceremony. Passengers would relieve the tedium of the jou 2 CONC rney by watching dolphins, flying fish, the albatross and other forms of marine and avian lif 2 CONC e quite new to them. Occasionally a passing ship would be sighted, and perhaps the Diamond "s 2 CONC poke" to one or more of them. The course was down the Atlantic towards the South American coa 2 CONC st, then south-east towards the Cape of Good Hope, then across the Indian Ocean and well sout 2 CONC h of Western Australia till they first sighted Australian land at Cape Otway.32 2 CONT 2 CONT Young Tom Clancy, in his later years, told his family that it was a fairly monotonous trip, b 2 CONC ecause there were few incidents. He mentioned that ceremonies were held to mark the Crossin 2 CONC g of the Line, when King Neptune and his retinue appeared and some were shaved. One stormy ni 2 CONC ght a rather simple man got on to an unsecured box which moved and caused the man to suffer b 2 CONC ruised legs. During the storm some water trickled through a crack on to Tom's face, waking hi 2 CONC m. Thereupon, he went up on to the deck and was tossed about a bit before he returned to hi 2 CONC s berth, none of his seniors being any the wiser concerning his nocturnal walk which could ha 2 CONC ve had disastrous results. Such are the memories of a young boy, no doubt coloured by the pas 2 CONC sage of time.33 2 CONT 2 CONT The migrants were reminded that reaching their destination in good health depended on observi 2 CONC ng the rules for cleanliness and airiness and Dr Irons saw to it that the rules were observed 2 CONC . Migrants were up by 7.00 am. By 8.00 am, when breakfast was served, children had to be wash 2 CONC ed and dressed, the decks swept, the beds rolled up and, weather permitting, carried on deck 2 CONC , and the berths well brushed out. No smoking was allowed between decks and spirits were no 2 CONC t allowed to be brought on board. Dinner was at 1.00 pm and tea at 6.00 pm. Married men, in r 2 CONC otation, kept watch in quarters to prevent irregularities. Monday and Friday were washing day 2 CONC s. Every Sunday, Dr Irons mustered the migrants at 10.30 am to see whether they were personal 2 CONC ly clean and had on clean clothes, after which divine service was conducted. Dr Irons also se 2 CONC lected men to act as teachers to the children and, quite probably, Thomas Clancy (who later t 2 CONC aught in Melbourne) was one of those selected. Migrants were encouraged to read the Bible an 2 CONC d to be careful in their behaviour. The ship carried a supply of religious and moral books. O 2 CONC n the journey, the parson (if there was one), the schoolmaster, the surgeon or the captain, p 2 CONC leaded with migrants each Sunday to observe frugality, industry, sobriety, purity, self-hel 2 CONC p and humility. 2 CONT 2 CONT In addition to looking after children, preparing meals, mending clothes, women were encourage 2 CONC d to engage in other tasks, such as making clothes. Sometimes squabbles arose, inevitable whe 2 CONC n people are confined to a little space for months. And there was gossip about the places fro 2 CONC m which they came and to which they were going, people sharing what information they had. 2 CONT Deck Scene 2 CONT Deck Scene 2 CONT Courtesy NSW State Library 2 CONT 2 CONT There was one particularly savoury piece of gossip. On board there was a youth who represente 2 CONC d himself as "the boy Jones" and if any of the passengers did not know who "the boy Jones" wa 2 CONC s before they embarked, they certainly learned about him on the journey. Three times "the bo 2 CONC y Jones" had made an illegal entry into Buckingham Palace and twice he had been caught and ha 2 CONC d served a term of imprisonment in Tothill Fields Prison. His second term of imprisonment wa 2 CONC s for three months and he was released on 14th June 1841. During his time there his conduct h 2 CONC ad been exemplary. It is not known how manv passengers believed that the youth who did the ta 2 CONC lking was really "the boy Jones" but some did. And so did the Press in Melbourne. A few day 2 CONC s after the Diamond arrived, the Port Phillip Patriot wrote: 2 CONT 2 CONT "The boy Jones, whose repeated intrusions into Buckingham Palace is well known, arrived as a 2 CONC n immigrant on the Diamond." 2 CONT 2 CONT Nearly three weeks passed after publication of that information before the same paper publish 2 CONC ed a mass of information from England up to 18th August, brought out by the Wallace. One ite 2 CONC m from an English newspaper stated: 2 CONT 2 CONT "The boy Jones is not it seems on board the Diamond after all. He was taken to Cork to be pu 2 CONC t on board, but Captain Taylor refused to have anything to do with him. The Government had co 2 CONC ntrived to have him smuggled out of the country but whether he has gone, even his father is i 2 CONC gnorant. There is a boy on board the Diamond who represents himself to be the boy in question 2 CONC ." 2 CONT 2 CONT Doubtless this item would be read and discussed with interest by those who came on the Diamon 2 CONC d. And material for further interested conversation was provided a few days later when the sa 2 CONC me paper published a long report from The Times commencing: 2 CONT 2 CONT "The case of the boy Jones appears to us to be one of the most important that has ever occurr 2 CONC ed touching the rights of a British subject." 2 CONT 2 CONT The account tells how a Mr James went to the boy's father about ten or twelve days after th 2 CONC e boy's release from prison and asked for permission for the boy to go to sea on the Diamon 2 CONC d and promising good wages. Then follows an incredible account of Mr James and a police offic 2 CONC er taking young Jones to Gravesend, back to London, to Cork, to Bristol, to Plymouth, back t 2 CONC o Bristol, then to Liverpool, and finally after about a month Mr James returning to London an 2 CONC d reporting to Mr Jones that the boy was on a ship (not named) and would be away about nine m 2 CONC onths, then adding that it was quite desirable that "nothing should be said on the subject I 2 CONC f any enquires were made of the family". Of course, the paper asked who paid for all this tra 2 CONC vel and where did the boy get to? And that is the end of the story as far as the Melbourne Pr 2 CONC ess was concerned but many a migrant must have asked from time to time, "What happened to th 2 CONC e boy Jones?".34 2 CONT 2 CONT During the voyage one male adult, one female adult and five children died and seven babies we 2 CONC re born. Bounty was held from Mr and Mrs Kirby on account of ill-health and they died in Melb 2 CONC ourne on 21st December 1841. 2 CONT 2 CONT Gratuities were paid to Dr Irons for 254 persons at the rate of 10/6 making a total of £133:7 2 CONC :0. Captain Taylor received 3/- each for the same number, making his total £38:2:0; the firs 2 CONC t mate, Mr Thomas Elkin, received £19:l0:0; the second mate (William Davies) and the third ma 2 CONC te (William McKenzie) each received £12:14:0. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mr J. Patterson reported to the Lieutenant-Governor, Mr C.J. La Trobe: 2 CONT 2 CONT "We wish to inform you that the immigrants in question came to this Colony in very good healt 2 CONC h and express themselves satisfied with the treatment they experienced during the trip."35 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1841, there was a mud-bar over the Yarra River which blocked any vessel drawing over seve 2 CONC n feet from proceeding up the river. Consequently, ships anchored in Hobson's Bay (which at t 2 CONC hat time was crowded with shipping), many of them opposite Williams Town, after Tobin, the pi 2 CONC lot, dressed in frock coat and chimney pot hat, had come aboard and steered the ship to its a 2 CONC nchorage. Then all kinds of persons came aboard chiefly for the purpose of hiring servants.36 2 CONT 2 CONT Various formalities had to be undergone before anyone could disembark. Two days after the arr 2 CONC ival of the Diamond, the agents, Were Brothers & Co., placed an advertisement (which did no 2 CONC t appear till 11th November) to the effect that "the migrants of the ship Diamond having pass 2 CONC ed the Board of Examiners, are now open for selection. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Clancy's had arrived.
